It’s Trophy Trout time!

Updated: Jan 31, 2021

Temps are low and Trout Weights are High

Trophy Trout season on the Texas Coast is currently in full swing. Fishing has been good with consist trout in the 7lb range and lots of bonus redfish and drum. This past summer we experienced a huge increase in fishing pressure due to Covid 19. People had more time on there hands and chose to spend it on the water. This pressure has defiantly made the fishing tougher in the Laguna Madre and Baffin Bay with trout in the 8lb and 9lb range harder than usual to come by. Now with low temps and people back at work the number of boats on the water is few and far between. This has allowed the fishing to gradually return to the norm thought the winter.

This time of year is know for its dramatic weather shifts and with weather shifts come fish pattern shifts. So far this year we have fished cloudy days with water temps in the high 40' and sunny warm days with water temps approaching 70. Currently all trips are with artificial lures due to live bait being far and few between. On cloudy cold days the fish have been holding in deeper water mainly finding fish in channels that bisect a flat and moving up into 3-4ft of water on grass flats if the day warms some. But they will not be far from deep water. The key has been a extremely slow retrieve with a soft plastic on a 1/16oz jig head. Most bites are happening with the bait sitting still on bottom during a pause in the retrieve. During the sunny warm days trout and redfish can be found in abundance moving well up into the clear shallow grass flats in 1-2ft of water and requiring a wading approach due to them being extremally spooky. Top waters, corky's, and soft plastics have all been producing fish.

Looking forward, spring is right around the corner and with it comes the spring tides. Riding the tides will be the bait moving back into Baffin Bay. Along with a migration of predators following the bait. This will provide great action and boxes of fish no matter your experience level or preferred technique. Live shrimp will be plentiful allowing for live bait and artificial trips.
